New Words Added to Dictionary – August 2012

Each year, the editors of the Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary review the cultural landscape of the English language and update the printed and online versions of their best-selling dictionary. Editor at Large, Peter Sokolowshi explains some of the new entries: “Some of the new words this year provide colorful images. Terms like ‘man cave,’ ‘underwater’ (when used to describe mortgages), ‘earworm,’ and ‘bucket list’ paint vivid pictures in your mind. They show that English-speakers can be very creative as they describe the world around them.” Several new additions also reflect the introduction of new technology. Recent additions in August 2012 include the following:

aha moment
bucket list
cloud computing
copernicium
earworm
energy drink
f-bomb
game changer
gassed
gastropub
man cave
mash-up
sexting
systemic risk
underwater
