The most portrayed human character of film is Sherlock Holmes, first introduced by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in 1887, who has been portrayed in movies and television 254 times. The role of Sherlock Holmes has been played by more than 75 actors, including Christopher Lee, Charlton Heston, Peter O’Toole, Christopher Plummer, Peter Cook, Roger Moore, John Cleese, Robert Downey Jr., and Benedict Cumberbatch. In second place, is William Shakespeare’s Hamlet that has been portrayed 206 times by different actors.
