The Enemies of Peace

From De vita solitaria (1346) by Francesco Petrarca, commonly referred to as Petrarch (1304-1374), an Italian poet, scholar who lived during the Renaissance and is considered the father of Humanism. Sometime in the past century, Petrarch’s quote was mistakenly attributed to American philosopher and poet Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882). As is often the case on the internet, the misattribution is repeated online and find its way into several print editions of quotation reference books; however, Emerson never wrote or said this.
